This advice remains valuable today—we all must stay diligent. While Nosara’s network of thieves has become more sophisticated, the fundamentals haven’t changed. As members of this community, let’s keep our eyes and ears open. Report any unusual noises or suspicious vehicles—especially those parked and running at night—by posting on Las Huacas Alerts or contacting our security guards directly.
Think like a burglar to stop a burglar!
Why?
Burglars prefer the path of least resistance. Your goal is to make their job difficult—and unpredictable.
What They Want
Burglars are after valuables that are easy to sell, buy, or trade. The top five items they look for are:
Money
Passports
Electronics
Guns
Drugs
How to Make It Harder for Them
Educate Guests and Renters
Remind them: “Loose lips give burglar tips.” Don’t share or post the property’s address.
Avoid showing off valuables—phones, cameras, watches, or other tech—especially in public.
Upon arrival, secure and store belongings immediately.
Always lock doors and set alarms when leaving the property.
Vary routines—don’t leave the house at the same time every day (for dinner, for example).
Protect Your Home and Property
Maintain curb appeal that signals the home is lived in: trim lawns and bushes, and keep windows visible from the road (no overgrown trees or shrubs blocking them).
Install motion-activated outdoor lights.
Consider renting both a quad and a car—leave one at home when you go out to suggest someone’s there.
Use smart devices to control lights, electronics, and cameras remotely.
Install an alarm system with surveillance cameras—ideally one that’s internet-connected and includes a cellular backup module.
Get a dog—burglars dislike them. A barking dog is one of the most effective deterrents.
Staying alert and taking small preventive steps goes a long way in protecting your home and our community.
